"ABP used in the answers refer to Art by Preference/Preference Evans, the artist providing the service.
Before You Book
1. What types of commissions do you accept?
ABP creates original artwork on canvas, paper, select wearable items, and other approved surfaces. Each project is reviewed individually to determine whether it is a good fit.
2. How much does a commission cost?
Pricing depends on the size, surface, materials, subject, complexity, and time required. Most commissions start $500, but exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis. A personalized quote will be provided after your project details are reviewed.
3. Can I request a specific size, surface, or subject?
Yes. You can include your preferred size, surface, subject, colors, and other details in your inquiry. ABP will let you know what is possible and provide pricing based on the completed project requirements.
4. Can I provide reference images?
Yes. Reference images are welcome and can help communicate your subject, composition, colors, or overall direction. Your finished artwork will remain an original work created in my artistic style; an exception would be the replication of an existing mark, like your business logo.
5. Are there commission requests you don't accept?
Yes. ABP reviews every request before accepting it. A project may be declined or modified based on the requested subject, materials, surface, intellectual-property concerns, timeline, or other factors.
The Commission Process
1. How do I request a commission?
Start by submitting a commission inquiry with details about your idea, preferred size or surface, desired timeline, and any relevant reference images. ABP will review your request and respond with next steps.
2. What happens after I submit my inquiry?
ABP reviews the project details and determine whether the request is a good fit. If so, we’ll finalize the specifications, pricing, timeline, and payment arrangements before work begins.
3. When does my commission officially become a project?
Your commission is officially accepted once the project details have been approved, the required payment has been received, and your project has been placed on the ABP production schedule.
4. Do you provide sketches or design concepts before starting?
When a project requires a preliminary design, the process for your project will be discussed during the planning stage. Payment is required before either are started.
5. Can I see progress photos while my commission is being created?
Progress updates are provided throughout the process for most projects, particularly at the beginning of the work. Smaller projects with minimal steps or fast turnaround may not have as many updates. ABP determines when progress photos are shared; there is no set interval.
Timing & Delivery
1. How long will my commission take?
Turnaround varies based on the size, materials, complexity, and current production schedule. Your estimated completion timeframe will be provided before your commission is scheduled.
2. Can I request a specific completion date?
You may request a specific completion date, and ABP will let you know whether it can be accommodated. A date is not guaranteed until it has been confirmed.
3. Do you offer rush commissions?
Rush commissions may be considered when my schedule allows. An additional rush fee may apply depending on the timeframe and project requirements.
4. How will my completed artwork be delivered?
Completed artwork may be shipped or arranged for local pickup or delivery when available. Delivery options will be discussed based on the size and nature of your commission.
5. Does shipping cost extra?
Yes. Shipping, special packaging, and additional handling costs are separate from the commission price unless otherwise stated in your quote.
Design Changes
1. Can I make changes to my design after I submit my request?
Yes. Your request gets the conversation started. Many clients change their minds during the initial consultation phone call.
2. Can I make changes after I've approved the design?
Minor changes may be accommodated at my discretion before work begins, provided the change does not substantially alter the approved concept, materials, or scope of the project. Once ABP has begun executing or permanently applying a design element, changes may no longer be possible.
3. What happens if I want to make changes after work has begun?
This depends on the type of project and the change being requested. In some cases, a minor change is possible. Any exceptions are determined at my discretion and may require an additional fee.
4. If I want to add something after work has begun, is there an additional fee?
Requests that add to the original scope of the project may result in an additional fee. The cost will be discussed before additional work is performed.
5. What happens if my requested changes substantially alter the original project?
A substantial change may require a new quote, revised timeline, or a new project altogether. ABP let you know what is possible before proceeding.
Customer-provided Items
1. Can I provide my own item for you to customize?
Yes. Customer-provided items may be accepted for wearable-art commissions and other approved projects. The item must be reviewed and approved before being sent or delivered.
2. What types of items can you paint?
ABP considers a variety of surfaces and wearable items, including select bags, shoes, jackets, and other materials suitable for the proposed artwork. Approval depends on the condition, construction, material, and requirements of the project.
3. How do I get my item to you?
Once your project has been accepted, you’ll receive instructions for delivering or shipping your item. Please do not send an item before your project has been approved.
4. What happens if my item arrives damaged or isn't suitable for the project?
Customer-provided items are inspected when received. If an item arrives damaged, has undisclosed issues, or is unsuitable for the proposed artwork, ABP will contact you before proceeding.
5. Will you document the condition of my item before beginning?
Yes. Customer-provided items will be documented upon receipt so that their condition is recorded before work begins. A damage assessment may also be provided.
Payment & Refunds
1. What payment types do you accept?
Most credit/debit cards are accepted, along with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Affirm, Afterpay, and in-house installments.
2. When is payment due?
Payment (partial or in-full) is required before any work begins, including sketches or design plans. Your payment terms are established when your commission is approved.
3. Do you require a deposit?
If you do not pay in full before service is rendered, a deposit is required to reserve your project and production time. The deposit amount will be provided with your quote.
4. Do you offer payment plans?
Payment plans may be available for qualifying commissions. Any payment schedule must be agreed upon before work begins.
5. Are deposits and payments refundable?
Deposits are nonrefundable. Payments are also nonrefundable once work has begun. Please review the complete commission terms for additional details.
